Why are video tags publicly accessible if YouTube hides them in the UI?

YouTube removed tags from the visible video page in 2020 to discourage casual tag-stuffing, but the data is still rendered into the page source as a tag for legacy SEO reasons. The UI is private; the source code is not. Anyone viewing the raw HTML — or running this tool — can read it.

When does the meta keywords tag fail to appear?

Some videos don't include it — most commonly newer Shorts, uploads from brand-new channels, or videos where the creator left the tag field blank. In those cases the tool reports 'no tags found' rather than a generic error. It's not a fetch failure, the tag genuinely isn't in the page source.

Is using extracted tags for my own videos ethical?

Looking at competitor tags for research is a normal part of YouTube SEO and totally fine. Copying an entire tag set verbatim into your own video is lazy SEO and YouTube's spam systems may flag it as content imitation. Use what you find as input to a thoughtful tag strategy with the /tools/youtube-tag-generator, not as a copy-paste source.

Does this tool work for unlisted or private videos?

No. Only public videos expose the meta keywords tag in the page HTML. Private videos require an authenticated session and unlisted videos won't render the same metadata for anonymous fetches — both would require YouTube Data API access with the channel owner's OAuth token, which we don't have.
